Facebook Photo Fetcher Test

Here is my first attempt to work with a WordPress plugin. It is pulling the pictures from my Facebook account, which is actually quite neat. Looks like I need to include captions in order for it to really look good. Also seems a little buggy with the lightbox javascript code, the first row and all links above will loose the ability to be clicked on, except for the bottom part of the image, so I will have it disabled for now, you will have to live with having to use the back button for now. I may be able to find a way to fix it.

WordPress Upgrades Can Be Painfully Annoying

The day before yesterday I just updated my WordPress install to the latest, which at the time of this writing is 2.8.3, and well it was not as simple as I would have liked it.  The auto-update function does not seem to work with my settings, and it seems that after reading up on what it requires to function, I an certain that many people’s PHP installations (if not most) are not going to allow it to function.  It says the site’s files must be owned by the same user PHP executes as, or at least that is how I interpreted what they said in the instructions.  Well that limits it to PHP installations that implement some form of suPHP or the like.  Or they have all of their files owned by apache, or have some other really weird setup.  Well my system does not use suPHP, and I am happy about that due to the performance differences.  The manual update was strait forward, but still seemed overcomplicated, due to their not wanting to suggest anything that would hoze people’s custom changes, plugins, etc.  It worked, and I am happy about that.  I did have a full backup of everything just in case.

One thing I am grateful for  is the fact that it will let me know when I log in to the administrative interface that there is a new version, please upgrade.  I have seen too many fairly complicated PHP software applications get installed and never updated, and though that is often because people don’t actually think, look, or care in the first place, it is nice to see a feature like that to help people, who are not complete douche-bags, to keep their application up to date.  If people only knew the horrible things that can happen when they apply the “set it and forget it” attitude to publicly available site software, or server software.  I could tell you horror stories that would make you piss yourself, or well probably just laugh.  They, as human’s have loved to do from the beginning, often get mad and blame the network administrators or web host for not being psychic and knowing that they didn’t pay attention to their ancient software and automatically update it for them.  People need to own their problems, but at least a reminder helps make the need for an update clear to the person responsible, if they are actually using the software.  I am sure there are ways you can even have an email sent to you when an update is needed.

Yet Another Theme

I had to scrap that last theme, it would not let me change the “Blogroll” to something else.  I mean what is a “Blogroll”?  I don’t link to other blogs, and if I did, I would not call it a blogroll.  I suppose some people do get into this blogging community thing, and that is cool, but I don’t have time to do that kind of stuff.  I have some things that I want to say that I believe others could find useful at one level or another, and I want a place where I can share it with people in a modern fashion.  In the future, maybe I will link to some specific ones which share some good or interesting information, but for now, I am even coming up short with what to put on my “Aboot” page.

The theme I had to scrap was called “Slate“.  I decided to go with one which was clean, shadowed, textured, and just all around neat and simple.  This one is called “Fusion“, and I found it somehow following several links while investigating some RSS plugin that I think might be able to take and generate posts on this site from an RSS feed.  I was looking that up in hopes to archive and store old stuff I posted on my blogs in other locations like my MySpace account.

Moving forward with WordPress

Yay!  I have setup a new theme, and am pleased with it.  I set it up last week sometime, after trying all kinds of different ones that just didn’t have what I wanted.  Ok, so it is not really colorful or flashy, but it turns out this one seems to have a slick enough layout, it does not detract from the fact that this wordpress is there for the articles, not everything else around it.

I have also come to the conclusion that I will have all kinds of topics, screw the themed topic idea.  I have all kinds of stuff rattling around in my head waiting to fall out and splatter on a blog somewhere.  To tell you the truth, it is all connected anyway.  For example, my biblical world view and belief in God will reflect in all the things that I do and talk about, or at least I hope so, considering that view point means that I believe God put everything here, for a reason, and our lives should reflect that in one way or another.  I will also be replicating some posts onto another site, which from the get go, I planned to have setup as sort of a portfolio, and technical information repository.  I don’t want to get too caught up in making sure I only post specific things on this site, and not on the other, I will just copy as I see fit.

Now I will be tweaking the rest of this WordPress install, as at this moment, I have not even customized the about page.  For now I will keep it basic.  In time, I am sure things will change, but one step at a time.

I Need a New Theme!

Bleh…  Not a fan of the default theme, that looks nasty.  Ok, not to insult the wonderful people who put it together of course, but I want something with more color, less starchy blocky and plain.  I am a colorful person, often hard to figure out, and many people do not understand me.  I need a theme that can reflect a little more of my personality, with variety, color, and style.  I guess the search begins…. Well at least it will as soon as I have some time to do it.
